Book 4, Moving Day! These books always start with a great scene. “I just needed to see the look, the one that lets me know that he’s got it as bad for me as I do for him.” That one admission from Vic really sets a tone for this installment of the PsyCop series. On moving day we see Jacob and Vic negotiate furniture and futon sex. The boys are moving into the cannery they bought together.
In the midst of a moving van full of stuff, Jacob and his partner Carolyn get called in on a case and Vic and Crash, Jacob’s ex, are left to finish handling boxes and furniture. Crash is provocative as usual. Vic decides to look up an old friend from Camp Hell and discovers that there is no trace of Camp Hell, its residents/patient, or Vic at all on the internet. Oh and Crash flirts shamelessly and Jacob here finds his limits.
Vic is not deeply involved in a case at first, and he’s taken some time off for the move. However, Jacob is greatly affected by this case. This is a shift in the relationship and series because usually Vic is too much in his own head or a case and Jacob reaches out and takes care of him. This time Vic has to deal with a distant Jacob.
This gives Vic time to consider his past and his present. With his questions about the absence of information on the internet, he goes to confront his partner Zigler. Since they are both off work, Vic goes to Zigler’s home and gets to see his partner’s domestic life. Similarly, Vic is left to make domestic and set up his household. Vic also questions about how “out” to be at work. While working to set up his house, Vic finds a video camera and finds on it a video of Jacob with his ex-Crash. Vic is jealous!
Also, Jacob is withdrawn and won’t talk to Vic about the case. Lisa shows up suddenly upset and seeks out Vic’s help in dealing with her gift. Back at work, Vic and Zigler are dealing with ghosts and Zigler pushes Vic on working better with ghosts to get what they need from them. Job is spending longer days at work and at the gym.
After putting together a few pieces of information (which he had trouble doing in book 2), Vic charges into an active crime scene to accuse Jacob of cheating. The fact that Vic violates this intrinsic piece of police protocol tells us how off balance Vic is, or perhaps tells us Vic is an immature, impulsive, erratic, and simply not very good police officer or boyfriend. I was really struck by how nuts he is busting into a nursing home full of cops during an investigation. Maybe Vic is at some kind crossroads because he’s suddenly taking a very active role in his own life. First by confronting the lack of information about him, Camp Hell, or his former Camp Hell residents online and then trying to find out why. Then he confronts Jacob and the nature/future of their relationship head on.
The old Vic maybe would have used it as a way out of the relationship or would have shrugged it off because he simply didn’t get that involved with other men but this seems different.
Ok a very critical reading of the story, would make it seem like a bit of plot manipulation, because Lisa just happens to show up and Vic happens to suspect and want to confront Jacob and the two of them charge into the crime scene which leads to them helping on the case. It kind of seems too coincidental. That said, Lisa’s presence and her struggles with her gift throw Vic into the role of mentor, which also ends up pushing him to work on his own gifts and control. Vic starts to see his own gift and power differently in helping Lisa with hers. He grows.
Furthermore, after confronting Jacob, there is a scene of the two of them making up (sort of) in which the dynamic between them shifts sexually but with emotional undertones. This would seem to add more balance to the relationship.
Vic realizes he doesn’t know enough to do what he needs to do to help work the case. Resourceful, Vic goes to Crash’s to ask Miss Mattie for help and he follows her recommendation. Her suggestion helps to make him use his gift more effectively and he helps to solve the case. Lisa too assists Vic in amping up his power. This success also pushes Vic to confront the fact that his control of his power is weak and that if he wants to do this work and do it better he needs help or better training.
Jacob helps Vic see that he could be better. At the end of the book, Vic finds his old boyfriend and fellow Camp Hell resident Stefan.
This book is critical to the overall series so far. This is where the series shows it has real potential to go farther and longer. Vic becomes a much more self-aware and complex character, and one leaves this book with higher expectations of the character and the series.

Secrets a PsyCop Novel edition by Jordan Castillo Price Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

......4.5 Stars........Is it even possible to dislike a PsyCop book? So far, I’ve loved them all and am so happy that there are so many more awaiting me.

If you haven’t started this series, do it now. Really. If you’ve read this 4th book, you probably gave it 5 Stars, too. So. What’s left to say? It was nice to have Lisa back. There was a kick-ass sex scene in the beginning. Victor got drunk. Crash is PMing him. And Victor is looking for answers about his Camp Hell buddies.
Another entry in the Psycop chronicles that further develops the personal histories of the two major characters and throws in some new twists about the past. This entire series is really just turning into one long novel with each book about the equivalent of a very long entry (these are each standard novel size but one). The positive side is that it can be a BIG story with lots of characters who come and go; the negative side is that it's easy to lose track of characters from the first two books if you lay the series aside for a few weeks (and probably read some other series in the interval). But I've read all but the last one and will undoubtedly read that as soon as I recover from having read two in succession over a three-day period. Miss Mattie is a great minor character--hope we find out more about her.
Though I liked the story when it got going with Lisa, the beginning dragged on and on with Vic's lack of confidence. He had his life as it was before, but as with the second book, the mismatch with Jacob comes up again and sends him bumbling again. And the jealousy and lying seem kind of a prop. And, though Vic is jealous about Jacob, the attraction and nonsense with Crash continues. He clearly is strong in his abilities, so I don't like when he is written so self-deprecating while his love interest is so stereotypically drawn and continually reinforced as uber-competent, buff, huge, movie star handsome. Though Jacob is completely smitten, is it all just because of Vic's medium talent. The sex scenes all seem to key on the talent, and it's book 4 and still no scenes with Vic topping, though it is alluded that it happens.
Secrets is interesting on a bunch of levels. First, Vic and Jacob's relationship continues to move forward. Sometimes I want to pull Jacob aside and tell him that he has no idea how fragile things are, because I'm not sure he realizes how fragile Vic is, but then again, maybe it's Jacob's arrogance that keeps them together long enough for Vic to continue to grow into the relationship. The mystery is both creepy and unusual. The ending, well, it's pretty much a cliffhanger, but it's not like you weren't going to read the next one anyway. This one was too good to stop now. And Lisa! It was so great to have her back, and so great to see her relationship with Vic not just mended, but strengthened. She brings out the protector in him, and that's not a role he often plays--it requires social interaction/confrontation he usually shys away from--but he does it for her.
