The earth has died many times, and it always comes back looking different. In an exhilarating, surprising exploration of our planet, Craig Childs takes listeners on a firsthand journey through apocalypse, touching the truth behind the speculation. Apocalyptic Planet is a combination of science and adventure that reveals the ways in which our world is constantly moving toward its end and how we can change our place within the cycles and episodes that rule it.
In this riveting narrative, Childs makes clear that ours is not a stable planet, that it is prone to sudden, violent natural disasters and extremes of climate. Alternate futures, many not so pretty, are constantly waiting in the wings. Childs refutes the idea of an apocalyptic end to the earth and finds clues to its more inevitable end in some of the most physically challenging places on the globe. He travels from the deserts of Chile, the driest in the world, to the genetic wasteland of central Iowa to the site of the drowned land bridge of the Bering Sea, uncovering the micro-cataclysms that predict the macro forthcoming ice ages, super-volcanoes, and the conclusion of planetary life cycles. Childs delivers a sensual feast in his descriptions of the natural world and a bounty of unequivocal science that provides us with an unprecedented understanding of our future.

A really good book, but a little unorganized. It makes a zillion points in a random, haphazard manner that I find irritating, though you might not. A pretty good book overall.Product details

Apocalyptic Planet Field Guide to the Everending Earth (Audible Audio Edition) Craig Childs Audible Studios Books Reviews
Mr. Child's books just get better and better. His research is a beautiful combination of academia and total physical immersion. Not being a specialist, like so many of the real life characters in the book, he is able to connect the dots of many different disciplines and lay it out in layman's terms. I found the book to be highly entertaining and highly educational.
Just the best non-fiction story I ever read. It's not all "doom and gloom", just a realistic look. I don't want to spoil it so I'll just say this is a great adventure so incredibly well written.
Craig Childs is a mix of Anthony Bourdain and Indiana Jones and if I were 30 years younger... I'd want to be Craig when I grow up.
Childs is one of m favorite authors. Until this book I didn't think he could match his "House of Rain" effort. Apocalyptic Planet approaches climate change and all of its emotions and issues in a clever and informative manner. Excellent book!
In Apocalyptic Planet, Author, Craig Childs finds something interesting to say about life and life forms in every marginal landscape he visits. Half adventure stories, half tome to nature, this book is satisfying and engaging. Each chapter focuses on a different ecosystem and the challenges the author faces exploring them. Few except adventurers like Craig Childs would deign to visit the places he explores. Highly enjoyable and definitely recommended.
His writing really is poetic but I was left at the end wondering what he had actually said about the topic. The world is a place of ongoing cataclysms and we are living in a tiny fraction of time between cataclysms but what is the take away message for what we should do in the here and now.
Craig Childs turns science into a literary and visceral adventure. My intellect as well as my nervous system are always engaged through his writing. I feel like I'm there with him in the dessert, the Antarctic...where ever he roams to tell about it. Apocalyptic Planet is a slight turn for Childs, venturing into territory that may be considered political—climate change. Yet he is able to pull it off well by painting a tangible picture of lands that could be lost, and by putting them in the context of a much longer timetable—thousands and millions of years—than the decades we experience and can grasp in our simple lives. This book doesn't judge or pronounce, and it certainly inspires reflection, as well as awe of the incredible planet we call home.
This may be my single favorite piece of nonfiction to date. I found it in a tiny bookstore in Durango where the staff leaves bookmarks bearing their signatures in books they recommend. This one caught my attention because the bookmark in it was overflowing with signatures.
It is the most beautifully written analysis of natural and unnatural cycles; of the effects of global climate change and overpopulation; of optimism, pessimism, alarmism and realism. This books reads like a fairy tale founded in scientific research, dripping with despair and yet brimming with hope.
If I could gift it to each and every inhabitant of Earth I would.
A really good book, but a little unorganized. It makes a zillion points in a random, haphazard manner that I find irritating, though you might not. A pretty good book overall.
