Summer of Deception Elva Cobb Martin 9781946016348 Books Reviews
This was an amazing story of redemption with enough mystery and suspense to keep you spell bound to the end. It was a lovely romance that sent me searching for more books by this author. I have been blessed by this book and am so glad that I happened upon it!
I really enjoyed reading this book of intrigue and mystery! It is a book I had problems putting down!! It is one that you will love and keep you wondering what will happen next!! A good clean mystery!
Summer of Deception is a great romance laced with angst and heroisms. I live close to Charleston and found the setting well described and the characters real to life. I enjoyed the engaging prose and at the end looked up to see what else Elva Cobb Martin has written and ordered my next book!
The author did an excellent job of combining mystery, suspense, action, reality, romance, and Christian principles into an easy to read modern-day story. I will look for this author again.
In my opinion, debut novelist Elva Cobb Martin has certainly become on of the novelists to watch. She delivers a fast-paced story with intriguing and engaging characters. This is one I'll recommend to my friends!
“Summer of Deception,” by Elva Cobb Martin is a page-turning romance novel, full of suspense, with sweet and tender touches, Christian values, and is true to southern form. I purchased Summer of Deception for my library, and will certainly add it to my paperback library as well. I look forward to this debut novelist’s next creative work.
Rachel York moves from Ohio to Charleston, South Carolina for the summer for two reasons. She wants to escape Easton, who decided he wanted someone else, and she needs more information about her brother after the DEA reported he lost his life investigating a drug ring. She didn’t expect to find a wounded and somewhat embittered former Marine with magnetic appeal.
Especially in the first half, there’s a profusion of adjectives that make the read too wordy, and unappealing. And too many paragraphs started with “The following day, morning, afternoon, or evening. Adjectives were also used where adverbs were needed. The author must have worked hard to use verbs in a unique way, but the result is often either laughable or questionable. How does one “etch” a t-shirt or a truck come slowly “munching” up the drive? These are just two of many examples. I questioned other parts, as well. How did Luke stoop down “on his heels” without toppling over? How was Rachel able to carry the gun Rob had given her on the plane from Ohio to Charleston? If money was tight, why did Luke own so many expensive cars? How did the fire manage to destroy a whole barn of harvested tea without doing major damage to the barn? I didn’t think it made sense that Rachel sporadically took her noisy puppy with her to places like secretly watching for drug traffickers or to a masquerade party but left it home at other times. There wasn't much of a mystery. Rachel and Luke just hide information from each other, but I had the criminals figured out early. I basically felt the book was too clinically written without the passion that pulled me into the story and made me the love the characters. I did like them, however.
